Rumor has it they can be had for cheap in the US and that it's not at all difficult to stuff a decent powerplant in there. If I ever get a college scholarship in the US, and these prove to be true, the urge might be too strong to resist, even if it's just for the sake of owning something old and with a V8 without having to sell an organ first...

You remember this? I am convinced that the Laguna was removed from existence by Sam Beckett in 1979, and an evil leaper went back and made it real again circa 2004.

I never cared for the way they handle, but they were very comfortable cruisers. Sucked gas pretty bad too as I recall.

Chevelles, Monte Carlos, etc. of that year sell for about $5000-$10000 depending on options and condition. It's not "cheap" (under 5000) but it's also not expensive and you can get one, swap it, and have it running pretty fast for under the price of a new Corolla.

But if you cheap, old, and V8, your best bet is to find a 6-cylinder 60s Mustang Notchback (~5000, same condition, but a better car to start with) and pop a junkyard/pick a part 302 V8 in. It will look, ride, and handle better and have more power than the Chevelle for less. For an extra few thousand you might find a 6-cylinder fastback.

And you might actually be able to turn a profit on it, by calling it a 'restomod'. Less people are caring about numbers-matching original parts and just want a comfortable interior and more modern engine in a badass old car body.

Also, there you go. $8500 with a 327. I would buy this and just swap the front end for a blacked-out 1973 Chevelle front end, and then find a way to remove the bumper for some smaller chrome ones.

If one was to do a 6-8 swap on a Mustang, it would also require attention to brakes, rear end, etc as these things are completely different on the cars. Fastbacks are hard to find, regardless of motor, and carry a premium of more then a grand. Decent 289 coupes are certainly available in the $5k to $8k range, if they require work.

That thing is sweet! Don't expect to turn, and probably need to do something about the motor as '73 was when the real detuning began. Probably has SBC, so that should be easy.

We're not talking about making the car identical it's more like just having a V8 Mustang period.

I've seen some 289 coupes go for under 10,000, but they're usually pretty rusted out or in need of more serious mechanical work. I imagine a lot has to be locality though, depending on how many got sold there and how fast they rust.

Agreed, I qualified if they need work, and I am speaking from experience here - '67 289 coupe that still has lots of work to be done. I don't think dropping an 8 in a 6 car would be safe without attention to the other things, especially due to the increased weight. Also, they handle like crap in stock trim, I'm contemplating upgrading the suspension on mine.
